Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns (Cul) & Dir (NSCBICC) attended Sadhana – The Grace through Kathak, a full-length solo work by Karthik Shetty on July 30, 2026, Thursday at Damansara Performing Arts Centre. The performance reflected the inner journey of an artist shaped by years of disciplined practice. Curated by The Temple of Fine Arts (TFA) Inner Space Dance, the Sadhana series began in 2016, inspired by the philosophy that mastery is attained through unwavering dedication. This performance features a unique repertoire of compositions by Guru Paramita Maitra and the late Kathak maestro Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj. Performed with live tabla, sarangi and sitar, the work journeyed through Kathak’s traditional repertoire, weaving together intricate footwork, rhythmic dialogue and dynamic chakkars (pirouettes). Integrating nritta (pure dance) and nritya (expressive dance), the performance showcased both technical virtuosity and artistic introspection. This event was one of the few full-length Kathak solo performances in Malaysia and had Vidushi Saswati Dey, Senior disciple of Maharaj ji in attendance.

Mr. Rajesh H Maniyil, First Secretary (Consular, Passport & Visa) presided the event as Chief Guest and congratulated GOPIO Malaysia and the school for promoting Yoga among younger generations. Ms. Dhanista Samariya, TIC Yoga NSCBICC conducted the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) and encouraged students and teachers to incorporate Yoga into their daily routine for a healthy lifestyle. About 389 students and teachers benefited from this Yoga session.

Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns (Cul) & Dir (NSCBICC) made courtesy call on Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (Melaka Historic City Council – MBMB) and met Mr. Hafiz bin Hasan, Director of Department of Corporate & Community along with Ms. Juliana Ong Poh Ling, Asst. Senior Director (Event Management) and Mr. Mohd Farouk Bin Najib, Choreographer. This was followed by a meeting at the Tourism Promotion Division, Melaka Chief Minister’s Department (Tourism Melaka) with Ms. Asmaliana binti Ashari Senior Manager and Mr. C. Gangkathran Chinniah, Senior Audit Manager.

Both departments of Melaka State positively welcomed proposals for Kathak & Yoga Learning Outreach Programmes / Workshops with state dancers and expressed interest in hosting upcoming ICCR empanelled troupes in Historic City Melaka as opening new avenues for collaboration and cultural connect with the State cultural department. The visit concluded with vibrant performances by Badan Kebudayaan & Kesenian MBMB, featuring Senandung Anak Melaka and Joget Konda Kondi, a delightful showcase of Melaka’s living heritage.

Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns (Cul) & Dir (NSCBICC) presided as Chief Guest in Aashadi Ekadashi Waari, a celebration gathering for children, featuring vibrant cultural performances and traditional dance presentations. The event held on July 25, 2026, Saturday at Multipurpose Hall, NSCBICC was organised by Maharashtra Mandal Malaysia (MMM). The Warkari tradition, a devotional movement focused on worshipping Lord Vitthal of Pandharpur, was highlighted during this occasion to promote spiritual discipline and the teachings of saints. MMM’s kids performed beautiful performances such as Ganesh performance, Shlok Recitation, cultural dances & group singing. Director congratulated MMM for organising this event for the second time at NSCBICC and appreciated the efforts taken by MMM in nurturing the culture and traditions of India amongst its young generation.About 80 MMM members participated in this event.

In conjunction with IDY2026 and as part of the ongoing series of workshops planned by NSCBICC this year, a Yoga Workshop on Surya Namaskar: A Journey of Strength & Serenity was successfully conducted on July 25, 2026, Saturday at Multipurpose Hall, NSCBICC. Led by Ms. Dhanistha Samariya, TIC Yoga NSCBICC, the session guided participants through 108 Surya Namaskar practices, blending breath, movement and mindfulness. The workshop brought together over 80 Yoga enthusiasts of all ages, celebrating the spirit of International Day of Yoga while experiencing the holistic benefits of Surya Namaskar which improves flexibility, strength, balance and inner calm. A special highlight of the event was the felicitation of IDY2026 Volunteers who had earlier extended their dedicated support during the grand 12th International Day of Yoga 2026 celebrations on June 21, 2026 at SSU Kelab Aman, Kuala Lumpur. Their contribution was warmly acknowledged and appreciated in this event. Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns (Cul) & Dir (NSCBICC) warmly welcomed the gathering and felicitated the volunteers. These free workshops reflect NSCBICC’s commitment to promoting and preserving Yoga within Malaysia’s vibrant Indian cultural and healthy community.

The event was organised by Mokshya Arts, Culture & Heritage Society Negeri Sembilan. This was Mokshya’s annual cultural showcase, held in conjunction with the sacred Jagannath Rath Yatra celebration. The programme brought together artists, devotees and the wider Malaysian community in an evening that honours India’s vibrant artistic and spiritual heritage through dance, music and cultural performances. In her remarks, Director highlighted the importance of preserving arts and culture besides encouraging the young talents to apply for scholarships in arts and culture provided by ICCR. In addition, Ms. Priyadarshini Sanyal, TIC (Kathak) entertained the audience with her eye-catching Kathak performance on Lord Jagannath. The event was also attended by Mr. Manoharan, Vice President – Board of Governor SJK(T) Bandar Sri Sendayan and Ms. Savithiri Velaithan, Founder of Shreevar Uniqarts Conservatory Resources.

The full-fledge Bharatanatyam performance by dancer-guru, Dr. Ajith Bhaskar accompanied by live musicians Dr. Sai Raja Rajeswary (Nattuvangam), Ms. Suganya Sharma (Vocal), Shri J. B. Aravind Sharma & Shri J. J Prathap Sharma (Mridangam) and Ms. Shuwehtha Raj Dashhen (Veenai). Pratibimba was presented with Ajith’s own voice-over reflecting on his life’s journey set against the background of the mythic episodes portrayed in the Bharatanatyam repertoire that he choreographed.

Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns (Cul) & Dir (NSCBICC) presided as Chief Guest in Tamil Kalai Kalacharam Association (TACA)’s Cultural Concert on July 18, 2026, Saturday at Multipurpose Hall, NSCBICC. In her remarks, Director congratulated TACA for promoting Tamil culture in Malaysia and for the important role being played by it as a bridge that connects professionals, entrepreneurs, academicians, artists, students, families, and members of the Tamil diaspora while preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Tamil language, arts, literature and culture. During this event, various cultural performances were presented including performances like Oyilatam (Tamil folk dance), Silambam (Tamil martial arts) and children’s performance. The event was also attended by Datuk A. Kohilan Pillay, Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Government of Malaysia; Mr. S. Gunasekaren, President of GOPIO Malaysia.

NSCBICC received a delegation from Faculty of Creative Arts, Universiti Malaya (UM) who came in response to the invitation extended to them during the courtesy call made by Director NSCBICC on their Dean on 2nd July 2026. The delegation was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Loo Fung Ying, Dean of the Faculty accompanied by Dr. Mohd Fairuz Zamani (Deputy Dean, Postgraduate, Research & Innovation); Dr. Premalatha Thiagarajan (Deputy Dean, Undergraduate & Student Affairs) and Ms. Rohaizan Ramli (Faculty’s Manager). The UM delegation visited NSCBICC on July 16, 2026 and held wide ranging discussions to explore collaboration on Yoga and Kathak Learning Outreach Programmes in order to provide holistic learning opportunities and strengthen cultural exchange, possibility of book launches by UM faculty members on books on culture at NSCBICC etc. The active participation of Teachers of Indian Culture in special programmes was also highlighted.

This meeting underscores the growing partnership between Universiti Malaya and NSCBICC.

Charge d’Affaires a.i. of India to Malaysia, H. E. Shri Hitesh Rajpal participated in the International Day of Yoga (IDY2026) celebrations organised by GOPIO Malaysia in collaboration with the State Government of Selangor, High Commission of India and NSCBICC on July 11, 2026, Saturday at Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Abdul Aziz, SUK Selangor. The event was graced by YB Tuan Ganabatirau Veraman, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Klang. Over 200 primary Tamil school students, along with their parents and teachers took part in a Yoga session, followed by the distribution of certificates. High Commission of India and NSCBICC extend sincere appreciation to the State Government of Selangor and GOPIO Malaysia for their efforts in promoting wellness and strengthening India-Malaysia cultural ties through Yoga.

As part of the International Day of Yoga 2026 celebrations, GOPIO Malaysia, in collaboration with High Commission of India and NSCBICC successfully organised Yoga programmes at two Tamil schools in Selangor. On July 8, 2026, Wednesday at SJK (T) Bukit Ijok, Sungai Pelek which had 64 student participants and on July 9, 2026, Thursday at SJK (T) Teluk Merbau, Tanjong Sepat attended over 164 students. The inauguration of Yoga Clubs at both schools underscores the shared commitment of High Commission of India, NSCBICC and GOPIO Malaysia in promoting holistic health, well-being, and the timeless values of Yoga among young students.

Matsyakanya – The Mermaid

Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns (Cul) & Dir (NSCBICC) participated as Guest of Honour at the ‘Matsyakanya – the Mermaid’, a Bharatanatyam dance production which featured a specially recorded musical score produced in India, the production blended powerful storytelling, expressive choreography and original music to present a fresh interpretation of the timeless tale of The Little Mermaid. This performance held on July 4, 2026 at Shantanand Auditroium, The Temple of Fine Arts, Kuala Lumpur was choreographed, artistically directed and produced by Dr. Sharmala Subramaniam, Founder and Artistic Director of SBNA Performing Arts. Staged for 1 hour and 40 minutes, the production featured more than 70 performers, ranging in age from 6 to 82 years old, representing all walks of life, from school students to doctors, lawyers, surgeons, accountants, and IT professionals and many others. In her speech, Director congratulated the production which was presented in fusion form.

Continuing their efforts to promote Yoga in Tamil Schools across Malaysia, GOPIO Malaysia, in partnership with High Commission of India and NSCBICC, organised IDY Outreach Initiative at four Yoga events on July 4, 2026, Saturday in conjunction with the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY2026). The events were held in collaboration with SJK (T) Sungai Sedu, Morib; SJK (T) Simpang, Morib; SJK (T) Walbrook and SJK (T) Nilai Impian, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. The programmes witnessed enthusiastic participation by over 320 school children. Yoga Clubs were officially launched at the schools and Yoga mats provided by High Commission were handed over to encourage regular practice throughout the year. Participation certificates were also awarded to all students.

In the run-up to International Day of Yoga celebration (IDY2026), Bihar Cultural Association and Bihar Foundation, in collaboration with High Commission of India and NSCBICC organised IDY Outreach Initiative on July 4, 2026, Saturday at Multipurpose Hall, NSCBICC. The event brought together around 30 participants, including children for a morning of wellness and harmony. Attendees engaged in Yoga asanas, meditation and mantra chanting, leaving everyone refreshed and rejuvenated. In line with the global celebrations of IDY, the programme was held under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”. It highlighted the timeless benefits of Yoga in promoting strength, balance, flexibility and vitality across all age groups. The session was conducted by Ms. Dhanishta Samariya, TIC Yoga at NSCBICC assisted by Mr. Vikash, Yoga Guru from Bihar Cultural Association. The programme fostered greater community bonding while reinforcing Yoga’s role in nurturing health, discipline, and holistic well-being.

Semi-Classical Choreography Workshop

In the line-up of workshops planned by NSCBICC this year, the Kathak Workshop on semi-classical choreography was successfully conducted for two-days on July 3 and 4, 2026, at Multipurpose Hall, NSCBICC. Ms. Priyadarshini Sanyal, TIC (Kathak) conducted this workshop which opened with an informative video presentation on the history of Kathak, tracing its evolution from ancient temple traditions to contemporary stage performances. Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns. (Cul) & Dir. (NSCBICC) welcomed participants and highlighted the role of dance in fostering community bonds. The workshop brought together over 25 dance enthusiasts for an immersive experience in semi-classical movement and expression. Participants explored graceful choreography that blends classical Kathak nuances with creative semi-classical interpretations, with special emphasis on rhythm, storytelling and stage presentation. This free workshop reflects NSCBICC’s commitment to promoting and preserving Kathak within Malaysia’s vibrant Indian cultural community.

In conjunction with International Day of Yoga (IDY2026), GOPIO International in partnership with High Commission of India and NSCBICC organised IDY Outreach Initiative on July 3, 2026, Friday at SJK (T) Jalan Fletcher, Kuala Lumpur. The event held under the theme “Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom & World Peace” saw enthusiastic participation from 39 teachers and 240 students. Principal Mr. Chandrasekaran Ramaya welcomed the dignitaries and emphasised the importance of integrating Yoga into daily life. This was followed by an inspiring address by Mr. Sashidharan Santhesegaran, Deputy President of GOPIO International. Ms. Dhanishta Samariya, TIC Yoga conducted an engaging warm-up and Yoga session, expertly guiding participants through simple asanas and breathing techniques. She also encouraged students to take part in the upcoming World Yogasana Sports Championship. The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates and souvenirs, effectively reinforcing the message of Yoga as a holistic practice that promotes health, discipline, and overall well-being among young learners.
