IDY Outreach Initiative by Universal Peace Sanctuary Malaysia

GOPIO Malaysia in partnership with High Commission of India and NSCBICC and Universal Peace Sanctuary Malaysia (UPSM) organised a Yoga event on June 30, 2026, Tuesday at SJK (T) Ladang Tumbuk, Selangor, one of the oldest Tamil schools (102 years old) in Malaysia. The event was attended by over 60 students. As part of its initiative to inspire school children to embrace Yoga at a young age and to encourage healthy lifestyles and holistic development, GOPIO Malaysia launched a Yoga club and also handed over Yoga mats provided by High Commission of India.

Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns (Culture) & Dir (NSCBICC) attended Ayodhya Putra (The Ramayana) production by Mahavidya Dance Theatre on June 28, 2026, Sunday at Kalamandapam, Kuala Lumpur. The Ayodhya Putra is a Bharatanatyam production that seamlessly blends cultural richness with a noble social cause and was brought to life by 21 dancers utilising the intense Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam, the production aims to ensure every audience member can easily follow its emotional sweep. The production was made on the narrative of storytelling paired with digital screens providing English subtitles. The narrative of the Ramayana held a special place in the region, deeply woven into Southeast Asian cultural identity through localised iterations such as Thailand’s Ramakien, Indonesia’s Kakawin Ramayana, and Malaysia’s own Hikayat Seri Rama. With universal themes of duty, sacrifice, and self-discovery, it continues to resonate profoundly across diverse generations. The live orchestra rendered from the works of celebrated composers Papanasam Sivan and Nirmala Raghavan. The stellar musical line-up featured Brahmashri J.J. Prathap Sharma on mridangam, Aravind on percussion, Suganya Jegathesan Sharma providing vocals and Hariraam Tingyuan Lam on violin.

In conjunction with International Day of Yoga (IDY2026), the Cyberjaya Indian Festival Association, in partnership with High Commission of India and NSCBICC and local diaspora organisations, organised a vibrant yoga event on June 28, 2026, Sunday at Indoor Sport Centre, Multimedia University, Cyberjaya. The event brought together 110 adults and 50 children in celebration of health and well-being. The event was graced by Mr Prabhat Gupta, Core Member of Vihangam Yoga, Ms. Shalini Kothari, Finance Director, GTM Group, and Mr. Bharat Batra, Founder of Nourista. A mindful colouring session conducted by a qualified teacher was also organised for children, promoting creativity and mindfulness alongside the yoga activities.

As part of the International Day of Yoga 2026 (IDY2026) outreach initiatives, Atmasiva Ashrem, in collaboration with High Commission of India and NSCBICC organised a yoga event on June 28, 2026, Sunday at Shri S. Ananda Krishna Multipurpose Hall, Sri Sundararaja Temple, Klang. High Commission was represented by Counsellor, Mr Prateesh Kumar. Addressing the gathering, Counsellor appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the community and commended the organizers for continuing the spirit of International Day of Yoga through meaningful outreach initiatives. Mr. Krishnan Sundaram, President, Atmasiva Ashram joined the celebrations which featured a yoga session and witnessed participation of over 185 Yoga enthusiasts. The organisers also presented laptops to deserving beneficiaries on this occasion.

As part of the International Day of Yoga 2026 (IDY2026) outreach initiatives, an exclusive session for women was organised by All Malaysia Malayalee Association (AMMA) in collaboration with the High Commission of India, NSCBICC and Isha Malaysia on June 28, 2026, Sunday at the Isha Yoga Centre, Petaling Jaya. The event brought together over 70 women of all ages for a morning of wellness, mindfulness and community. Graced by the presence of Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns (Culture) & Dir (NSCBICC), Datin Sri Shaila Nair V, President of AMMA, Ms. Hilda, President of Selangor & Federal Territory Malayalee Association (SFTMA), members and committee of AMMA, volunteers of Isha Yoga Centre Malaysia and many inspiring participants, the program featured engaging ‘Yoga for Wellbeing’ and ‘Mind Meditation’ sessions led by Ms. Lin, an Isha volunteer. In her address, Director NSCBICC spoke about the relevance of this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Aging”, in today’s world of increased life expectancy, especially for women. She emphasised that women taking up yoga not only benefit themselves but also bring a positive impact on their families and communities. The morning also included mystic music, ice-breaker games, and an Isha telefilm screening. It was a beautiful celebration of yoga, culture and sisterhood, leaving everyone uplifted and connected.

Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns (Culture) & Dir (NSCBICC) attended as Chief Guest at the Ramayanam – The Eternal Victory of Dharma, a production by Vehaara Arts under the Panggung Seni Tradisional 2026, an initiative by the JKKN to preserve Malaysia’s cultural heritage. In this production, about 80 performers participated and showcased their talents through a performance based on the Epic Ramayana. This grand production celebrates the enduring values of dharma, devotion, courage, and the triumph of good over evil. Some of the highlights were Sita Kalyanam, Sita Swayamvaram, War between Sri Rama and Ravana and many more. The event was also attended by Puan Hidayatul ‘Ein binti Mohamad Azmi, Director JKKN Kuala Lumpur.

In conjunction with the International Day of Yoga (IDY2026), a Yoga outreach activity was organised by GOPIO Malaysia in partnership with High Commission of India and NSCBICC on June 26, 2026, Friday at SJK (T) FES Serdang. Shri Prateesh Kumar Counsellor (Comm. Affairs) from the High Commission of India, officiated the event. The event was also attended by Mr. Ravendran Arjunan, Secretary General of GOPIO International. Speaking on the occasion, Counsellor congratulated the efforts of GOPIO Malaysia and the Tamil schools in Malaysia for nurturing a healthier lifestyle among young children, through Yoga. Ms. Dhanishta Samariya, TIC Yoga conducted a Yoga session, which was attended by over 150 students. Certificate of participation was awarded to all the participants. As part of promoting yoga among the young students, GOPIO Malaysia announced launching of a Yoga club too at the school.

The High Commission of India & NSCBICC successfully celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga in Kuala Lumpur on June 21, 2026, Sunday at SSU Kelab Aman Kuala Lumpur. The theme of this year’s IDY is Yoga for Healthy Ageing. Over 1,100 yoga enthusiasts came together for a refreshing morning of wellness. YB Senator Puan Saraswathy Kandasami participated as the Chief Guest and delivered an inspiring address on Yoga’s role in building a healthier, more productive society. H. E. Shri Hitesh Rajpal, Charge d’Affaires a.i., presided over the event and highlighted the remarkable journey of IDY from Hon’ble PM Modi’s vision to a thriving movement in Malaysia. A vibrant 40-minute Yoga session was conducted as per the Common Yoga Protocol of the Ministry of AYUSH, bringing together participants from all walks of life, diplomats, officials, Indian diaspora, school children, yoga organisations, yoga practitioners and media The Indian Muaythai contingent participating in the World Muaythai Championship joined the celebrations, underscoring Yoga’s importance for physical fitness, mental discipline, and athletic performance.

At 11 years, Tanvi was one of the youngest Indian citizens to have performed her Arangetram outside India. Tanvi performed 8 items in this Arangetram which are Pushpanjali followed by Allaripu, Jathiswaram, Shadbam, Varnam, Keerthanam, Padam, Kavadi Chindu and Thillana. In her remarks, Director congratulated the parents and teacher of Ms. Tanvi for shaping her with proper guidance and promoting with Indian classical knowledge. The event was also attended by ‘Nattuva Thilagam’ Guru Smt. Indira Manika, Founder of Tanjai Kamalaa Indira Dance School; Mr. Pasupathi Sithamparam, Director of MySkills Foundation and many other gurus and art lovers.

The event organised by Indian Classical Artiste Network Malaysia (iCAN) in collaboration with NSCBICC featured a rich tapestry of performances, ranging from Indian classical rhythms to Malay, Chinese and Western ensembles. Artistes from diverse ethnic backgrounds united on a single stage, showcasing the power of music to transcend cultural boundaries and foster unity. This event was hosted in conjunction with World Music Day and it highlighted how rhythm connects hearts across borders. Ms. Sujitra Jayaseelan, President of ICAN Malaysia; Dr. Sivabalan Shanmuga, Deputy President of ICAN; along with ICAN committee members and several distinguished music gurus from various music schools across Malaysia attended the concert. She also encouraged the performers and students present there to apply the numerous scholarships by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), including general scholarships, performing arts scholarships, the AYUSH Scholarship Scheme and other undergraduate and postgraduate scholarship opportunities. In the runup to the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations 2026, a Curtain Raiser Yoga outreach activity was organised by Sabah Indian Association (SIA) in partnership with High Commission of India and NSCBICC on June 17, 2026, Wednesday at SIA Hall, Kota Kinabalu. H. E. Shri Hitesh Rajpal, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., High Commission of India represented the Mission at this event. In his remarks, Cd’A a.i. appreciated the efforts of the SIA, Indian diaspora and local authorities in promoting Yoga. He elaborated on the evolution of IDY celebrations over the years, starting under the vision and initiative of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India H. E. Shri Narendra Modi and emphasised the deep resonance of Yoga among Malaysians from all walks of life. He also thanked the Government of Malaysia and State Government of Sabah, various Malaysian partner organisations and Yoga enthusiasts for their continued practice of Yoga in Malaysia. The programme commenced with Welcome Address by Datuk Dr. G. Mohan A. Gopal Naidoo, Organising Chairman & SIA Executive Committee, followed by a video presentation on the benefits of Yoga. H. E. Shri Hitesh Rajpal, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the High Commission of India, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasised that Yoga is a timeless practice that nurtures both body and mind. He highlighted how regular incorporation of Yoga into daily routines significantly improves physical health, mental concentration, and overall quality of life. He also warmly invited members of the Indian diaspora to participate in large numbers at the main International Day of Yoga celebrations scheduled for June 21, 2026 at SSU Kelab Aman. Vaidhyar Ms. Vidhyaa Manoharan, President of MAPA, delivered the welcome address. The event was attended by approximately 100 participants, including senior officials from High Commission, NSCBICC, MAPA members and representatives from various Indian diaspora associations. The festival was organised by Malaysian Barathanatyam Dance Association (MBDA). This major cultural event showcased hundreds of classical dancers from various academies across Malaysia. The two-day festival featured cultural Bharatnatyam performances, guest lectures and intricate group performances of South Indian classical dance. Director in her remarks congratulated MBDA for their numerous efforts in sustaining Indian classical dance form in Malaysia and thanked them for being a great support in the production of ‘Swagatam’ Performance performed by about 800 artists representing 46 cultural institutions / academies and community associations / organisations at the ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji’, an Indian Community Event on February 7, 2026, Saturday at MINES.

Art Historian was held on June 12, 2026, Friday at Multipurpose Hall, NSCBICC. The talk was organised by Kshetra Academy founded by Ms. Apsara Ramgopal. The insightful talk traced the groundbreaking journeys of 20th century dance revivalist couples across South Asia and Southeast Asia. It highlighted the legacy of pioneering preceptors Guru Gopinath and Guru Tankamani as well as their renowned protégés: Guru Citarasena & Guru Vajira Citarasena (Sri Lanka), Guru K. P. Bhaskar & Guru Shanta Bhaskar (Singapore), Guru Gopalakrishnan & Guru Kusum Gopalakrishnan (India) and Guru V. K. Sivadas & Guru Vatsala Sivadas (Malaysia) who ignited vibrant dance movements across their regions. In the run up to 12th International Day of Yoga, the officers and staff of High Commission of India and NSCBICC joined for a special Chair Yoga session on June 12, 2026, Friday at Consular Hall of the High Commission of India. H. E. Shri. Hitesh Rajpal, Charge d’Affaires a.i. inaugurated the session and addressed the gathering. In his speech, Cd’A a.i. highlighted the importance of integrating Yoga into daily professional life, stating that real harmony within leads to greater kindness, understanding and efficiency in our external engagements besides being a step towards achieving the goal of Yoga for Healthy Ageing. Led by Ms. Dhanishta Samariya, TIC Yoga, the session introduced simple yet effective seated asanas that participants could easily incorporate into their busy routines. This was also a grand celebration commemorating 150 years of India’s national song Vande Mataram. The evening showcased the richness of Indian classical music and dance. Eminent artistes from India and Malaysia, including Dr. Mysore Manjunath & Ms. Malavi Manjunath, Guru Dr. Gajendra Panda, Dr. Guruvayur Usha Dorai and Ms. Priyadarshini Sanyal, TIC Kathak NSCBICC enthralled the audience with their performances. Chief Guest H. E. Shri Hitesh Rajpal, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., High Commission of India, commended the organisers for their efforts in promoting Indian culture, particularly among the youth and highlighted how such initiatives deepen the cultural bonds between India and Malaysia. In the runup to the International Day of Yoga celebration 2026, a Yoga outreach activity was organised by GOPIO Malaysia in partnership with High Commission of India, Kuala Lumpur and NSCBICC on June 11, 2026, Thursday at SJK (T) Bangi, Selangor. High Commission Counsellor (Community Affairs), Mr. Prateesh Kumar participated in the event. The event was also attended by Mr. Ravendran Arjunan, Secretary General of GOPIO International. Speaking on the occasion, Counsellor lauded the efforts of GOPIO Malaysia in promoting Yoga among the students in Tamil schools across Malaysia, thereby nurturing a healthier lifestyle and fostering confidence, concentration and holistic development among young learners. He also highlighted the importance of Yoga for healthy ageing. A Yoga session organised on this occasion brought together 60 students from SJK (T) Bangi school. 30 Yoga mats were provided to the school for the benefit of children. Certificate of participation was awarded to all students. A Yoga club was also announced to promote students’ physical & mental well-being and improve focus through regular Yoga practice.

In the run-up of the workshops planned by NSCBICC this year, the first Yoga Workshop on Trataka (Third Eye Meditation) was organised on June 6, 2026, Saturday at Multipurpose Hall, NSCBICC. Ms. Dhanistha Samariya, TIC (Yoga) conducted a serene and focused session on the ancient yogic practice of Trataka. Participants learned to develop concentration by gazing at a single point or candle flame, promoting mental clarity, eye stability and inner calm. Attendees, dressed in white, actively engaged in the practice and later shared positive reflections on the enhanced focus and tranquillity they experienced. The workshop concluded with renewed motivation to incorporate this mindful discipline into daily life. These workshops are planned by the Teachers of Indian Culture to popularise the classes as well as to expand the outreach of both Yoga and Kathak dance. The first such workshop was the Dance Make-up Workshop by Ms. Priyadarshini Sanyal, TIC Kathak.

Bhai Mardana Sangeet Academy in collaboration with NSCBICC presented ‘Kalasangam’ concert, on May 30, 2026, Saturday at Multipurpose Hall, NSCBICC, bringing together the magic of Indian classical music and dance in a truly mesmerising way. Vocal brilliance by Dr. Aviraj Tayade, disciple of Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, left the audience spellbound while the rhythmic mastery on Tabla by Shri Nitin Ware added depth and vibrance to the recital. The evening also showcased Bharatnatyam performances of Guru Ms. Pradnya Gore and her students as well as Kathak performances of Guru Dr. Manjari Sriram Dev and her students. For the very first time at NSCBICC, the rare and soulful Esraj was also played by Shri Debayan Mujumdar that added a unique dimension to the evening’s celebration of culture. The students of Bhai Mardana Sangeet Academy also took the stage with soulful rendition of Bhajans and Hindustani classical ragas. Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Couns (Culture) & Dir (NSCBICC) congratulated the organiser for the illustrious lineup of performers and the work being done by them for promotion of Hindustani Classical Music and classical arts in Malaysia. According to the artist, ‘I am the Universe’ is inspired by the artist’s spiritual evolution and the Sanskrit Hymn, “Aham Brahmasmi”. The exhibition covers 26 art pieces created from outlived garments and reclaimed textiles. The collage artworks examined the nature of human existence through stories of love, belonging, transformation and the cyclical nature of existence. Director NSCBICC congratulated the artist for her unique expressions of art that combines textile, acrylic paint, embroidery as well as paper.

The Yoga session was dedicated to promoting holistic health and well-being through the timeless practice of Yoga. The 90-minute session was led by Yoga instructor Mr. Manoj Kaimal of Manasa Yoga, who guided participants through a series of carefully designed asanas, breathing techniques and mindfulness practices aimed at stretching, strengthening and rejuvenating the body, mind and intellect. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of over 60 attendees (physical and virtual participation) from diverse backgrounds, all coming together to celebrate the spirit of unity, wellness, and inner harmony. Ponnoviyam 2.0 – Exhibition of Thanjavur Paintings was inaugurated on 23 May 2026 at the Multipurpose Hall, NSCBICC by Chief Guest YB Senator Puan Saraswathy Kandasami. She was joined by H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy, High Commissioner of India to Malaysia. Smt. Lalita Devi Reddy, Datuk Ar. P. Kasi, Ms. Deepa Rajendra Okade and Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan, Counsellor (Culture) & Director (NSCBICC). Over 120 art enthusiasts attended the event. The exhibition organised by NSCBICC showcased the works of Mrs. Valli Sevugan and her students celebrating the timeless beauty of Thanjavur painting, renowned for its vibrant colours, intricate detailing and rich use of gold foil.
The evening opened with a soulful prayer by one of Mrs. Valli’s students, followed by addresses from dignitaries who praised the exhibition’s role in strengthening cultural diplomacy and community bonds. H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy commended the dedication of Mrs. Valli and her students while YB Senator Saraswathy highlighted art’s power to bridge traditions. Datuk Ar. P. Kasi noted the historical patronage of Thanjavur paintings by the Telugu and Maratha dynasties and Ms. Deepa Rajendra emphasised their living heritage. Mrs. Lalitha Reddy, a student of Ms. Valli, shared the learning process highlighting the intricate detailing and spiritual essence of the paintings while Mrs. Valli encouraged young learners to pursue traditional art with sincerity.
The exhibition drew art lovers and cultural patrons who admired the devotion and craftsmanship in each piece. The exhibition extended till Running until 29 May 2026; it offers visitors a glimpse into the splendour of Indian heritage and the enduring appeal of Thanjavur art.

Director NSCBICC congratulated the WICCI-Malaysia India Business council team and welcomed this initiative to celebrate the richness of Indian culture, heritage and arts in Malaysia. ‘Perak’, a musical and dance concert was held on 16 May 2026 at Dewan Banquet, SUK Perak by NSCBICC in collaboration with Perak State Government and Greentown Indian Cultural Society (GICS) to mark the successful completion of the 3-month Kathak and Carnatic Vocal Learning Outreach Programme with the Kumpulan Selendang Perak (KSP). The event was officiated by DYAM Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain Ibni Almarhum Sultan Idris A’fifullah Shah, Raja Dihilir Perak Darul Ridzuan. Shri Hitesh Rajpal, Deputy High Commissioner of India, was the guest of honour and represented the High Commission of India and NSCBICC. DHC in his speech appreciated the hard work of the TIC Kathak at NSCBICC as well as the 23 participants from Perak who embraced the opportunity to learn and perform the Indian classical art forms. The evening began with Dabus, the traditional Perak state dance performed by the Perak State dancers, followed by group and solo Kathak presentations. Special thanks were extended to GICS for their coordination. The event in part of the ongoing Programme of Co-operation in Culture, Arts and Heritage signed between the Governments of India and Malaysia in 2024 during the visit of YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia to further strengthening cultural ties between the two nations.

This is part of High Commission of India and NSCBICC emphasis on stronger outreach programmes. This is the very first visit to TFA Penang by the Director and fruitful discussions took place with the Chairman Mr. Raj highlighting the cultural exchange, mutual respect and the strengthening of institutional ties. Last year, Director NSCBICC had visited The Temple of Fine Arts Johor Bahru and they had later hosted lecture demonstration and performance by the ICCR Empanelled Yakshagana troupe at their premises in January 2026. This visit too in a similar manner has opened doors for future partnerships in Penang.

Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan Couns (Culture) & Dir (NSCBICC) attended Sutra Foundation’s latest art exhibition, ‘Let A Thousand Flowers Bloom’. The event was officiated by High Commissioner H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy who in his inaugural address spoke of the decades of hard work, dedication and artistry of highest order of Padma Sri Datuk Ramli Ibrahim and his Sutra Foundation that is responsible for the cultural bridge of Odissi between India and Malaysia. The exhibition of more than 130 works was staged at Kuala Lumpur after its impactful launch last January in Chennai, then to Bhubaneswar, Pune and eventually in New Delhi. The exhibition is a cultural conversation of India with the Golden Chersonese, one that began millennia ago and now finds new resonance in contemporary Malaysia and inspired by the lyrical presence of Odissi in Malaysia for the last four decades, the exhibition brought together photographs, drawings and paintings that not merely documents the dance, but responds to its translating and transforming movements. The exhibition also paid homage to the late Dr. Dinanath Pathy, a visionary who believed that tradition must live and transform across time and national boundaries.

They also had discussed avenues for future collaborations between two countries in the field of culture and exchanged ideas and thoughts on the cultural diplomacy. Like every year, NSCBICC and High Commission of India, Kuala Lumpur organised a grand celebration to mark the establishment of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) on 9 April 1950 with the objective of strengthening India’s cultural relations with the world and promoting mutual understanding through cultural exchanges. This year, ICCR’s 77th anniversary was celebrated as ‘ICCR Day’. In addition, the 15th Anniversary of NSCBICC’s establishment in Malaysia was also celebrated with gusto. The event served as a testament to the enduring cultural bond between India and Malaysia, featuring high-level diplomatic presence, insightful reflections from distinguished visitors and a vibrant showcase of classical arts.
YB Tuan Yuneswaran Ramaraj, Deputy Minister of National Unity, Government of Malaysia attended the event as the Chief Guest of Honour along with His Royal Highness (HRH) Tunku Zain Al-’Abidin ibni Tuanku Muhriz, ICCR’s Distinguished Visitor’s Programme; Dato’ Ts. Dr. Nagulendran Kangayatkarasu, Secretary-General, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Government of Malaysia; Padma Shri Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, Chairman, Sutra Foundation; Datuk B. Sahadevan, Managing Director / Secretary, National Land Finance Co-operative Society; Dr. Christina Yeo Ken Yin Division Secretary, International Relations Division (Culture), Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Government of Malaysia, Representatives from Government Cultural Bodies like National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN), Academy of Arts, Culture and National Heritage (ASWARA), academia, community leaders, head of cultural institutions etc.
The evening commenced with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp followed by Welcome Address by H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy, the High Commissioner of India to Malaysia. In his remarks, High Commissioner highlighted the significant journey of the cultural centre, which began in 2010 when he was posted here in Kuala Lumpur and reminisced about the challenges faced at the time of conceptualisation of ICC. He also stressed the role of ICC in Malaysia as the ‘Living Bridge’ between the two countries and proudly noted that the NSCBICC Kuala Lumpur has consistently been ranked as the top-performing Indian cultural centre globally among 38 such ICCs all over the world.
The ceremony featured two key videos: a commemorative piece documenting the 15-year history of the NSCBICC since its inception in 2010 along with a video reminiscing the journey of NSCBICC in the production of ‘Swagatham’, a specially curated dance performance during ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji’ (Welcome Modiji), an Indian Community Event organised on the occasion of the official visit of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi on February 7, 2026 at MINES, performed by about 800 dancers representing 46 cultural institutions and community organisations which entered The Malaysia Book of Records as the ‘Most Performers in Traditional Indian Dance’.
Chief Guest YB Tuan Yuneswaran Ramaraj, Deputy Minister of National Unity in his Special Address praised the NSCBICC’s role in fostering social harmony. He noted that cultural programmes are vital tools in uniting diverse communities, instilling values of mutual respect and love. He thanked the High Commission and NSCBICC for its proactive engagement with young Malaysian leaders and for facilitating high-level interactions between the two governments.
In the past year, several dignitaries and cultural troupes from Malaysia have visited India to take part in ICCR’s Festivals and prestigious programmes. HRH Tunku Zain Al-Abidin ibni Tuanku Muhriz, participant of ICCR’s Distinguished Programme 2026 shared his unforgettable experiences of ‘Cultural Diplomacy in Action’ at ICCR. HRH spoke about ‘weaving together’ of cultures, noting the shared history found in Sanskrit linguistic roots and royal court traditions. He highlighted the potential for think-tank collaborations between the two democracies and praised ICCR for its unmatched hospitality.
Padma Shri Datuk Ramli Ibrahim reflected upon his almost 40-year relationship with ICCR. He described the centre as a ‘neutral umbrella’ that allows creativity to bloom and emphasised that arts are the pinnacle of soft diplomacy. Mr. Muneswaren Palsamy represented Vehara Arts that took part in International Ramayana Mela Festival in October 2025 on the invitation of ICCR and MP State Government. He recounted a spiritual and artistic journey to Bhopal and Chitrakoot and described the profound experience of performing at the banks of the Mandakini River.
The event showcased a wide array of cultural performances including rhythmic Yoga presentation led by Ms. Dhanista Samariya, TIC (Yoga), NSCBICC with her students, showcasing balance and flexibility synchronized to music; Bharatanatyam performance ‘OmKarakarini’, by Ms. Ambigga Nagulendran from Kalpana Dance Theatre portraying the strength and beauty of Goddess Lalitha Tripurasundari and two energetic Kathak dance performances by Ms. Priyadarshini Sanyal, TIC (Kathak), NSCBICC along with her students; the first focusing on technical footwork and the second being a joyous depiction of Lord Krishna and the Gopis.
The Chief Guest of Honour, Guests of Honour, Speakers and Artists were all felicitated at the end of the programme. Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan Counsellor (Culture) & Director (NSCBICC) in her Vote of Thanks expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone and reaffirmed NSCBICC’s commitment to serving as an umbrella organisation for all Indian cultural bodies in Malaysia. The 77th ICCR Day was more than a celebration; it was a renewal of the “people-to-people” connect that defines India-Malaysia relations. This event, attended by over 200 guests from all walks of life and several media outlets, showcased ICCR’s cultural diplomacy outreach and also marked 15 years of NSCBICC as a beacon of heritage in Kuala Lumpur.

The event which was attended over 800 attendees, marking a significant milestone for the Indian diaspora in Malaysia.
Many cultural activities were organised especially ramp walk themed ‘Weaves of Rajasthan’. The showcase highlighted the state’s rich textile heritage, featuring involved designs including Leheriya and Bandhani (Tie-dye techniques), Royal Rajputi attire, Kota Doria and Camel Motif prints and striking black ensembles of the Kaalbeliya style. The attendees were treated with authentic Rajasthan cuisine. The Gangaur Shobha Yatra (procession) further amplified this spirit, involving over 70 participants, including children, ladies and gents bringing the widely celebrated Gangaur festival vibes.

Malaysia Odia Association (MOA) organised ‘Phala Kala’ Fruit Carving Workshop on April 4, 2026, Saturday at Multipurpose Hall, NSCBICC. The workshop focussed on the art of decorative fruit cutting inspired by themes from Indian cultural heritage. Chef Dibakar Sahu, a renowned chef led the session and demonstrated basic techniques of fruit carving and artistic presentation, incorporating traditional Indian motifs and festive symbolism. The workshop promoted Indian cultural heritage and Indian traditions by incorporating cultural motifs, symbols and festive themes into decorative fruit carving. The chef helped to blend art with culinary tradition by demonstrating how gastronomy can serve as a medium of artistic expression while preserving and promoting India’s rich aesthetic heritage.
Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan Couns (Culture) & Dir (NSCBICC) inaugurated the workshop and congratulated both MOA for organising such unique programmes and the participants for attending the same. TKI, the longest running Bharatanatyam school of Malaysia celebrated the launch of their official 60th Anniversary logo to mark the beginning of their Diamond Jubilee celebration. The school was inaugurated in 1966 by sisters Mrs. Indira Manikam and Mrs. Kamalaa Ramachandran which has since then grown into a nourishing platform teaching the Tanjavur style of Bharathantyam to over 1000’s of students all over Malaysia. Chief Guest, Datuk B. Sahadevan, Managing Director of NLFCS launched the event. A snippet of the school’s newest dance drama production, “Krishnayanam – From Birth to Beyond” being rehearsed for their 60th anniversary celebration, was also presented by their students during the event.

High Commission of India supported by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and in collaboration with Malaysian Indian Tour and Travel Association (MITTA) and Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) organised the India–Malaysia Tourism Roadshow and B2B Seller-Buyer Meet on 11–12 March 2026 in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Thirty tourism Industry stakeholders from 26 companies from India representing IATO had travelled to Malaysia for the events, while 65 Malaysian tour operators associated with inbound tourism attended the B2B meeting during the roadshow.
High Commissioner H. E. B. N. Reddy in his keynote address in Kuala Lumpur, highlighted the immense potential to enhance the two-way tourism and invited MITTA, MATTA Malaysia and the participating Malaysian tour operators to take advantage of new initiatives under “Incredible India” campaign by increasing their outreach to Indian tourist destinations. Mr. Bhuvanendraa Vikram, President of IATO UP Chapter made a detailed presentation on new and emerging tourism destinations in India, apart from highlighting the tourism attractions spread across various verticals- Spiritual and Religious Tourism (Buddhist circuits, Hindu pilgrimage destinations, and Islamic tourism); Medical and Wellness Tourism; Cultural and Heritage Experiences; Shopping and Lifestyle Tourism; and Film and Bollywood Tourism.

This Saree Walkathon witnessed enthusiastic participation of more than 1,000 women from India, Malaysia and other nationalities across Malaysia. This was a unique celebration of culture, unity, wellness and women empowerment. Participants proudly walked in traditional sarees with varieties of draping, colours and patterns symbolizing the harmonious blend of heritage and modern lifestyle.
The Chief Guest, YB Senator Saraswathy Kandasami lauded this exceptional initiative to promote ‘Nari Shakti’, emphasising the vital role women play in shaping families, communities and nation. Guest of Honour, Mrs. Lalita Devi Reddy, wife of the High Commissioner of India, spoke about the importance of women prioritising their health and well-being. She highlighted the benefits of Yoga, mindful eating and healthy lifestyle practices.

Consequent upon his arrival at The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi was welcomed with Natheswaram and Thavil percussion with raagam Sankarabaranam – Notu Swaram by Natheswaram and Thavil Isai Fine Arts Academy. Several cultural performances were also kept to showcase the dept of cultural connect between India and Malaysia. It included Thirumurai Recital by Malaysia Hindu Sangam led by Ms. Sujitra Jayaseelan and her students. Prime Minister congratulated the 8-member team for reciting ‘Illaka Vilakkathu’, a Thirumurai by Sage Thirunavukkarasar which meant the light of a lamp dispels the darkness in the house and similarly, the mantra ‘Namachivaya’ dispels the darkness in the mind. There was also ‘Wayang Kulit’ (traditional local shadow puppet theatre) along with puppet display by Akademi Arjunasukma. It combines storytelling, music and intricate puppet manipulation to portray tales from Ramayana & Mahabharata epics as well as local folklore. The Temple of Fine Arts performed Ramayana based Bharatnatyam performance with the popular Pan-Indian Bhajan by the great Sant Tulsidas, ‘Sri Ramachandra Kripalu Bhaja Mana’. This dance performance highlighted common cultural heritage of the region through Ramayana. The dance based on Bhajan was performed not only by local Malaysian-Indians but also by Malays and Chinese of this soil who have mastered the art of Bharatnatyam living in this neighborhood of multicultures. The finale cultural segment was Silambam. This martial art was demonstrated by three talented students from Majlis Silambam Porr Kalai Malaysia who had won in the National Sports Competition of Malaysia, Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA). Hon’ble Prime Minister congratulated all the artists for their great work delivered.

At the invitation of Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi undertook an official visit to Malaysia from 7 to 8 February 2026. The visit reflected the deep-rooted friendship and enduring people-to-people ties, based on civilizational connections between the two countries. It reaffirmed the shared commitment of the two Leaders to further consolidate and expand the India–Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. To welcome the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Indian community in Malaysia organised ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji’ (Welcome Modiji) event. The highlight of the event was ‘Swagatham’, a curated dance performance choreographed to welcome both Prime Ministers. The performance showcased the vibrant tapestry of Indian classical and folk dances including Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathak, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Yakshagana, Lavani, Punjabi, Tamil, Sambalpuri and Rajasthani folk dances, which were performed by about 800 dancers representing 46 cultural institutions / academies and community associations / originations. It also included TIC-Kathak and students of NSCBICC. In a breathtaking display, the Swagatam dance which was performed by nearly 800 artists represented one of the largest coordinated Indian classical and folk dance presentations ever staged in Malaysia. The performance brought together multiple generations of dancers, from young students to seasoned performers, symbolising continuity, transmission of heritage and community participation. The specially curated performance underlined the depth of bilateral ties and the shared commitment of both countries to strengthen people-to-people relations. The performance also entered The Malaysia Book of Records as the ‘Most Performers in Traditional Indian Dance’. Both Prime Minsters acknowledged the ‘Swagatham’ Dance Performance showcased the shared heritage of India and Malaysia through India’s vast cultural mosaic represented by classical and folk traditions preserved and promoted in Malaysia. The two Leaders also appreciated the operationalization of the Thiruvalluvar Chair of Indian Studies at the prestigious Universiti Malaya (UM), Kuala Lumpur and welcomed the establishment of Thiruvalluvar Center at Universiti Malaya. Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed the announcement of Thiruvalluvar Scholarships for Malaysian nationals.

The 77th Republic Day celebrations were held at India House with great fervour and enthusiasm. High Commissioner H. E. Mr. B. N. Srishti Nritya Ventures, founded by Shankeri Thiyagaraja a Bharatanatyam practitioner committed to producing high-quality classical dance productions in Malaysia, organised One-Day Bharathanatyam Dance Workshop for dance lovers. Through guided instruction and demonstration, the workshop sought to nurture both technical proficiency and artistic sensitivity among participants. Mr. Anand CS from India, a talented Bharathanatyam dancer who is disciple of Guru Sri RLV Subesh conducted the workshop. The participants benefited from this structured and immersive learning experience in Bharatanatyam, especially on the techniques, clarity of movement and artistic expression. The workshop achieved its aim to enhance the dancers’ understanding of body alignment, rhythm and aesthetics while encouraging disciplined practice and deeper engagement with the classical form.

NSCBICC in partnership with The Temple of Fine Arts Johor Bahru hosted an informative Yakshagana lecture cum demonstration and a vibrant performance by ICCR emapanelled troupe, Karnataka Kala Darshini Dance Troupe from Karnataka, India.
At Johor, Troupe Leader Mr. Srinivas Sasthan Krishnaiah, with 45 Years of rich experience explained about the Yakshagana performance to the audience of 80 students, teachers and parents. Upon completion of the lecture, the troupe performed ‘Kamsa Vadhe’, story which explained the story of Kamsa, a great King of Mathura and how he was killed by Krishna. NSCBICC, JKKN Perak & Greentown Indian Cultural Society Ipoh organised Yakshagana Lecture Demonstration with the artists of JKKN Perak. Around 25 artists participated and benefited in this workshop. The ICCR empanelled troupe taught the artists on costumes, steps and movement. In return, the JKKN Perak students performed the Tarian Zapin (Zapin Dance), a traditional Malay folk dance. The troupe leader began with a documentary screening that offered valuable insights into the origins, philosophy and artistic depth of Yakshagana, setting the stage for a deeper appreciation of the live performance and interactive workshop.
129th Birth Anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

High Commission of India and NSCBICC in partnership with Netaji Welfare Foundation organised the 129th Birth Anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. His birthday is also known as Parakram Divas. High Commissioner H. E. Shri B. N. Reddy garlanded the Netaji bust at the reception followed by floral shradanjali. The community leaders and association heads joined High Commissioner to offer the floral tribute. The event featured addresses by distinguished guests, tributes to veterans of the Indian National Army, cultural presentations, and scholarly reflections on the life and legacy of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. High Commissioner lauded the efforts taken by INA veteran and their families to instil the spirit of patriotism in students. The commemoration witnessed the participation of members of the Indian diaspora, students, and invited guests, reaffirming Netaji’s enduring inspiration and contribution to India’s freedom movement.
Netaji birth anniversary is also celebrated as Day of Valour/ Parakram Divas to highlight the inspiring life and contributions of Netaji to India’s freedom struggle and his mobilisation of Indian National Army (INA) in Southeast Asia. The legacy of Netaji, which is revered and remembered till date in Malaysia through the inspiring outreach activities of Netaji Welfare Foundation and Netaji Service Centre in different parts of Malaysia. The event featured addresses by distinguished guests, tributes to veterans of the Indian National Army, cultural presentations, and scholarly reflections on the life and legacy of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Yakshagana Dance Performance @ Kuala Lumpur

NSCBICC organised Yakshagana, a Special Dance Performance in conjunction with 150 Years of Vande Mataram celebrations by Karnataka Kala Darshini, the ICCR empanelled troupe. The event was officiated by YB Senator Madam Saraswathy Kandasami. This is the first performance of the troupe which will be performing at various locations like Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Johor in Malaysia. Counsellor (Culture) & Director NSCBICC, Ms. Vijayalakshmy Sunderrajan thanked the audience who had turned out for the performance as well expressed her gratitude to Karnataka Kala Darshini for their wonderful performance.
Chief Guest YB Senator Madam Saraswathy Kandasami lauded the effort taken by NSCBICC in promoting Indian culture here in Malaysia. The performance of the day entitled ‘Sri Devi Mahathme – Mahisha Mardhini’, Yakshagana is one of the most fascinating art forms of Karnataka with a unique and rare blend of powerful music and vigorous dance, marked by vivacious foot work. Yakshagana episodes are taken from our great epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata, Devipurana and Bhagavatha. The conclusion part featured Yakshagana performance celebrating 150 Years of Vande Mataram, the national commemorative initiative to celebrate the spirit of Vande Mataram and its unique role in the history of India.
The members of the troupe along with the troupe leader, Mr. Srinivas were felicitated by the Chief Guest and Director NSCBICC. NSCBICC hosted ‘Veena Vandanam’, a special Saraswati Veena concert by ICCR empanelled Kalaimamani Smt. Jayalakshmi Sekhar commemorating ‘Vande Mataram’ on 150th anniversary of India’s national song. The mesmerising performance by Kalaimamani Smt. Jayalakshmi Sekhar, accompanied by Shri Dharmenthiran Krishnan on Mridangam; Shri JB Arvind Sharma on Kanjira and her talented students left the audience spellbound.

Sutra Foundation under the leadership of Padma Shri Datuk Ramli Ibrahim represented Malaysia to take part in ICCR’s 11th India International Dance & Music Festival held at Prof. C. C. Mehta Auditorium, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Sutra Foundation featured their recent successful Odissi production, Radhe! Radhe! The Sweet Surrender! – Radha’s eternal longing meets Krishna’s divine leela. The festival was graced by the august presence of Rajmata Shubhangini Raje Gaekwad, Hon’ble Chancellor, MSU Baroda; Shri Anil Dhameliya, IAS, Collector & District Magistrate, Vadodara; Shri Sanjay Vedi, Director (PPR), ICCR, New Delhi; Dr. K M Chudasama, Registrar, MSU; Dr. Dhanesh Patel, Director, Office of International Affairs, MSU and Dr. Rajesh Kelkar, Head, Department of Vocal Music, MSU, adding dignity and prestige to the occasion. Organised by ICCR, SZO Ahmedabad in collaboration with the Office of International Affairs, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, the festival truly celebrated cultural harmony and artistic excellence besides offered students an immersive experience of international dance traditions. The festival fostered meaningful cultural exchange, enriching students with global artistic perspectives beyond academic learning. Adding joy, The Maharaja Saiyajirao University of Baroda signed a MoU with Sutra Foundation on 21 January 2026 to strengthen collaboration in the field of Performing Arts. The MoU, facilitated by ICCR and MSU’s Office of International Affairs, was signed in the august presence of Hon’ble Chancellor Rajmata Shubhangini Devi Raje.
World Hindi Day

High Commission of India & NSCBICC, in collaboration with various community organisations and international schools in Malaysia, organised World Hindi Day 2026. Community organisations such as the Bharat Club, Bihar Cultural Association, Geeta Ashram, Maharashtra Mandal Malaysia and Marwari Yuva Manch, along with Malaysian international schools such as Global Indian International School, Sayfol International School, Sprout Academy, Tanarta International Schools and Vikas International School, participated enthusiastically in quiz, poetry recitation and Performances in Hindi. Deputy High Commissioner Mr. Hitesh Rajpal inaugurated the event and shared his views on the role of Hindi in strengthening cultural understanding and connecting people from different cultures and nations. He also read out a special message from Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on World Hindi Day. He honoured the community organisations, international schools, individual participants and winners of various events that participated in the event. This event proved to be a very meaningful platform for bringing together Hindi learners, Hindi speakers and Hindi lovers in Malaysia. Over 160 community members, students, teachers and academics participated, appreciating the rich cultural heritage and significance of the Hindi language. As part of the cultural programme, students learning Hindi at NSCBICC performed a Hindi song for the audience. High Commission and NSCBICC thank the students, teachers and parents, members from all the schools and community organisations for their enthusiastic participation in World Hindi Day 2026.
Seminar on ‘Broadening the Horizon – from Start up to Scale up for BCA Women Entrepreneurs’

Bihar Cultural Association organised a seminar on ‘Broadening the Horizon – from Start up to Scale up for BCA Women Entrepreneurs’, aimed to empower women with basic tools to run their businesses confidently. The seminar covered major topics aimed at boosting the development of entrepreneurial women.
The event was officiated by Dato’ Ramesh Kodammal, Chairman of ASEAN India Economic Council. On the first day, Ms. Sona Ghosh, MBA Marketing, Entrepreneurs Business AddA spoke on the topic ‘Passion to Profession’. She discussed on the important of understanding the different types of markets and gain basic skills in marketing The second speaker, Ms. Navjot Plaha, General Management of Trainer Aegis BPO spoke on ‘Communication, the bridge to success’. She briefed on the importance of communication in a business which can be use productive communication strategies. The third speaker Ms. Shraddha Pandya, touched on the theme ‘Grow with Confidence’ focussing on the grow business with branding & social media, types of brands- content type discussion for different types of brands, brand positioning, social media- various platforms and organisations and many more.
The event achieved the target. This Seminar achieved the objective and many participants benefited from this event of empowering women with basic tools to run their businesses confidently.
