Ratna Basu Roy comes from Kolkata. She has performed extensively to music lovers there and various other places in India, in numerous live stage performances, television and radio programs. She made her maiden debut as an All India Radio Artiste at the tender age of nine, in the very popular Bengali show Shishu Mahal, Galpo Dadur Ashor from the 1970s. Since then she has performed many times and continues to do so for All India Radio and Television, mostly with Doordarshan. She has been performing classical and light classical during her career but specializes in Ghazals, Bhajans and Thumris. However, tonight she will be performing Ghazals and Hindi oldies from films that are popular and based on light classical styles.
Ratna Basu Roy had her first lesson in music from her mother Smt. Indrani Basu, who is in the audience tonight. Ratna graduated and post-graduated with a Masters’ Degree in Music with distinction, from the Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata. Ratna received intensive training in Classical music under the able tutelage of Ustad Ghulam Akbar Khan (son-in-law of Padmabhusan Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan Sahab and brother-in-law of Padma Shri Ustad Rashid Khan) of the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana and Pandit Pannalal Mishra of Benaras Gharana.
She has performed playback for the Television Series Phirey Dekha and has released several albums and CDs namely Pranati, Bangla Mayer Kole, Shiuli Korano Bhore and more recently Bristee Jhorey aei Shravane.
